Nicolas Maduro makes first trip to Haiti as Venezuela’s president, after cancelling April visit

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro made his first official visit to Haiti on Tuesday as the countries began negotiations to figure out ways to renew a special fund that uses oil money on mostly infrastructure projects.
Maduro and Haitian President Michel Martelly met privately for several hours on the grounds of where the National Palace stood before it collapsed in the 2010 earthquake.
Venezuela is one of the biggest donors to help impoverished Haiti rebuild from the catastrophic 2010 earthquake.

GAO slams USAID’s Haiti rebuilding efforts

WASHINGTON —  U.S. efforts to help rebuild Haiti after the devastating 2010 earthquake have been plagued by poor planning, delays and mistaken cost estimates that have forced many projects to be scaled back, the Government Accountability Office has concluded in a report released this month.
Of the $651 million Congress allocated for Haiti reconstruction to the U.S. Agency for International Development, only $204 million has been spent three years later. And much of that has gone to questionable use, the GAO found.

St Kitts PM condemns shooting of bank manager

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – A prime minister for one of the sister islands in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) has condemned the shooting of a bank manager that occurred during an attack one of the bank’s branches in Antigua Monday night.
St Kitts & Nevis Prime Minister Denzil Douglas described the incident as regrettable.

Prime Minister hands over electronic equipment as police continue probe

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has handed over computer equipment to the police as investigations continue into allegations that she and senior members of her government were involved in a plot to undermine the judiciary, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution and the media.
During a two hour meeting with the police on Tuesday, Prime Minister Persad Bissessar, accompanied by her lawyer and Housing Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal, said it would be inappropriate to comment on the investigations.

FAO director general to visit St. Vincent

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – The Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), José Graziano da Silva arrives here next month on a two-day visit, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has said.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines was one of two Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries recognised by the FAO for significantly reducing undernourishment ahead of the 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) deadline and Prime Minister Gonsalves had journed to Rome to receive the award.

Jamaica to help African state deal with teenage pregnancy

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Jamaica says it will provide technical assistance to Burkina Faso in preventing adolescent pregnancies and supporting adolescent mothers. Information Minister Sandrea Falconer made the disclosure following a study tour of the Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation as part of the activities of the Working Mission from Burkina Faso, led by the First Lady of the West African country, Chantal Compaoré. Falconer said the modalities of bi-lateral agreement are being worked out and that additional discussions will commence at a later date.

PM distances his administration from police position on media

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has sought to distance his administration from a policy adopted by the police as it relates to the accreditation of media workers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
“I don't know if the press thinks that we should have some agency to do some accreditation but the truth of the matter is this, you have freedom of the press, freedom of expression in this country and freedom of expression includes freedom of the press,” Prime Minister Gonsalves said.
