US Coast Guard rescues Haitian fishermen

MIAMI, CMC – The United States Coast Guard says it has rescued five Haitian fishermen aboard a disabled vessel that had been drifting in the waters off northern Haiti.
A brief Coast Guard statement said officials were notified that the vessel had been found in the area of Canal de Tortue and contrary to earlier reports, there were five fishermen on the boat and not nine.
The statement said all are safe and in no immediate distress.

DPP not giving update

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - DIRECTOR OF Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard SC yesterday said he would not “fall prey” to calls for an update into the criminal investigation into the criminal investigation into the collapse of CL Financial Ltd, CLICO and related subsidiaries.
In a two-page statement, Gaspard noted that questions on the status of the criminal investigation were premature as the matter was still at its investigative stage.

President names new Integrity Commission

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – President Anthony Carmona named members to the Integrity Commission on Monday, even as calls continued for the resignation of its chairman, Ken Gordon, over his decision to meet with Opposition Leader Dr. Keith Rowley before the latter presented a motion of no confidence in the Kamla Persad Bissessar administration.
President Carmona in his first major appointment since he was sworn into office in March, named the four other members to the Commission, including retired Justice Sebastien Ventour, who has had a distinguished 34-year legal career.

China potential

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - CHINESE are big spenders and should that country become a new source for this country with regard to visitors, the increased spending will redound to the benefit of the local economy.
A three-member Chinese delegation attended one of the Mega Fam programmes and spoke highly of the benefits which can accrue to this country from tourism services, including spending.
“Chinese people love shopping and they tend to go for famous brands,” said Melody Ding of Shanghai.

Top official discards Haiti-Dom. Rep. energy link for now

Santo Domingo.- Energy Commissioner Enrique Ramirez on Monday debunked notions of interconnecting Haiti and Dominican Republic with power lines for now, “maybe down the line, say in 20 years.”
His affirmation comes in the wake of a report by Haiti newspaper Le Nouvelliste, that Andress Appolon, director of that country’s electricity utility EDH, is in Santo Domingo to review possibilities of the sale of electricity.

IMF and World Bank review B’dos finance sector

BRIDGETOWN—The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are to conduct a comprehensive study of Barbados’ financial services sector. A statement from the Central Bank of Barbados said the two Washington-based financial institutions will conduct the financial sector assessment programme (FSAP) between July 1 and 17.

IDB providing millions in funds for water project in Haiti

WASHINGTON, CMC – The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) says it is providing a US$35.5 million grant to Haiti for a programme to expand and improve drinking water services in the capital of the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.
It said the grant will support the second phase of a programme launched in 2010 with support from the IDB and the Spanish Fund for Cooperation in Water and Sanitation in Latin American and the Caribbean (FECASALC).

Cash Flow Woes At LIAT

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Following last weekend’s fanfare and celebration surrounding LIAT’s acquisition of the first of eight new ATR aircraft, cash flow problems resulting from the re-fleeting exercise have surfaced.
LIAT management warned staff that June salaries may be paid late because of “severe cash flow constraints” – a direct result of shareholder governments’ failure to keep their promise to finance the purchase of LIATs new fleet.

US diplomat says CBSI having an impact on security in the region

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – United States Ambassador Brent Hardt says the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI), now into its third year, is beginning to have an impact as a result of the many programmes implemented to fight crimes in the region.
Hardt along with Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee Monday met with local and foreign senior security officials to discuss matters pertaining to the CBSI.
