CARICOM-SUMMIT-Regional leaders open summit on a high note

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders began their 34th annual summit here on Wednesday night, basking in the achievements of the 40-year-old regional integration movement, but acknowledging also there is still much more to be done.

Host Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar described the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas that lead to the formation of the regional integration movement four decades ago as “a defining moment in our region’s history.

BARBADOS-TRADE-Authorities cracking down on illegal trade in precious and second hand metals

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Barbados authorities warned Wednesday that dealers engaged in the precious and second hand metal should obtain a licence and register with the police before attempting to export those commodities. According to an official statement issues here, the dealers must also ensure that the metals are “specifically declared” to the Comptroller of Customs, and that the Precious Metals and Second Hand Metal Act 2013-3 mandates Customs to approve and inspect all exports in these commodities.

JAMAICA-ACCIDENT-American national among two killed in vehicular accident

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – American Courtney Tatar was among two people killed in a vehicular accident along the Bustamante Highway in Mineral Heights, Clarendon on Monday, police said. They said the 35 year-old from North Carolina and 36 year-old Christopher Burke of Clarendon died when the vehicle crashed into a truck. Both men were taken to the hospital where they died while four others have been hospitalised. The driver of the truck, Derrick Demster was among those hospitalised.

Sagicor strengthens regional partnership with CXC

TRINIDAD-MILITARY-US engaged in joint military training with Trinidad soldiers

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The United States military is engaged in a month-long training exercise with the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) as part of the efforts to boost support for the region.

A statement from the US Embassy here said that similar training exercises and humanitarian work had been conducted in several countries including Guyana and Jamaica.

Caricom’s air transport dilemma

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Express - THE CEREMONIAL opening of the 34th regular summit of the Caribbean Community takes place in Port of Spain this evening amid widening complaints across this region against deep frustration with two critically related issues—regional air transportation and hassle-free intra-regional movement for Caricom citizens. Both issues will surface on what has been described as a “heavy-loaded” agenda for the three scheduled working days, starting tomorrow, that include a special session at Chaguaramas, birth place of Caricom 40 years ago.

Jamaica hosts regional SIDS meeting
