Journalist wins case against Trinidad Express newspapers

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – A reporter, who was dismissed in 2009 for refusing to disclose the source of his information for a story, has been awarded TT$600,000 by the Industrial Court for wrongful dismissal.
Darryl Heeralal sued the Trinidad Express after he was dismissed for failing to submit his source to the then editor-in-chief Omatie Lyder on June 29, 2009 for the story that concerned a probe into a shootout between police and bandits in Wallerfield, east of here in August 2007.

Demand for slavery reparations deposited at Dutch embassy

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC - The compensation many descendants of Dutch slavery feel is due to them became official after members of the Committee Reparations Slavery Past Suriname deposited a claim at the Dutch embassy here.
“We want to discuss the material and immaterial damage,” said Committee Chairman Armand Zunder as he presented a petition to Dutch charge d'affaires Ernst Noorman.
Zunder was joined at the presentation by Committee member Guno Rijssel, who stressed “we’re did not go begging. We only demand a satisfactory settlement that is due to us.“

CDB funds projects to improve public services’ access

GEORGETOWN, Guyana - The seventh cycle of the Guyana leg of the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) was launched today to enable projects in vulnerable communities geared towards improving access to basic public services, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.
The BNTF programme is a direct targeted poverty reduction programme of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) with Guyana and nine other Caricom countries. With US$6.1M funding from the bank and the Guyana Government’s US$1M contribution, the total programme size of the project is US$7.1M.

ECCB announces monetary protection plan

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Bank depositors in the sub-region can look forward to a greater level of protection after the announcement that an Eastern Caribbean Deposit Insurance Corporation will be created.
Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) Governor General Sir Dwight Venner revealed that a total of four new institutions will be established to help “stabilise and consolidate the financial sector” in the sub-region.

Cave Hill researchers make HIV discovery

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - Barbados has scored a small victory in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
Local researchers have made a groundbreaking discovery – HIV positive people who go on anti-retroviral therapy (ART) here, have been showing a suppressed viral load.
To put it simply, they are non-infectious.

Reducing fiscal deficit major challenge facing Barbados economy

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The major challenge facing the Barbados economy is to reduce the fiscal deficit in order to determine a policy that finds the right balance between fiscal consolidation and economic expansion. Prime Minister Freundel Stuart told a one-day National Consultation on the Economy that the country is experiencing its most severe economic challenges since World War II and that it had managed to stave off the worst effects of the economic and financial crisis which had “bedevilled the world economy over the last five years”.

Venezuela’s President for T&T

(Trinidad Express) Trinidad yesterday announced a visit by CARICOM Heads of State, and the leaders of several other countries including the newly elected president of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro. The announcement was made by acting Communications Minister Anil Roberts at the post-Cabinet press conference, at the Office of the Prime Minister, Port of Spain.

Dominica’s national debt in excess of EC$700 million

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Dominica’s national debt is in excess of EC$700 million (One Ec dollar = US$0.37 cents), the island’s director of audit, Clarence Christian has said.
Speaking on the state-owned DBS radio, Christian said the total central government debt was EC$702.8 million with external debt accounting for EC$520.9 million.
He said the value of unpaid cheques, which people have not collected, is in excess of three million dollars.

St Lucia prime minister proposes overhaul of regional education system

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, - Prime Minister Kenny Anthony is proposing major changes to the regional educational system in order to reduce the growing problem of unemployment among young people.
He made the recommendations in an address to over 150 youth attending a regional conference hosted by the Caribbean Youth Empowerment Programme which highlights challenges facing youth at risk in the region, at a three day conference Thursday.
