Brazilian Benefits - Jamaica Ready To Boost Tourism With Links From South American Nation

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Gleaner - FOLLOWING THE establishment of an embassy in Brazil last year, the Jamaican Government is indicating that it is moving post-haste to ensure that the country is able to capitalise on tourism and investment opportunities served up by the South American nation. Alison Stone Roofe, Jamaica's ambassador to Brazil, has noted that Brazil continues to experience real economic growth, adding that with a population of 200 million that recognises Jamaica as a great brand, the possibilities for the island are endless.

JTB Hosts Jamaica House In Moscow

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Gleaner - Jamaica has been seeking to capitalise on the buzz being created by its athletes in Russia with the hosting of what it has dubbed Jamaica House Moscow. The initiative follows a similar effort mounted at the 2012 Olympics in London and seeks to boost tourist arrivals from Russia and Eastern Europe. Jamaica Tourist Board says Jamaica House Moscow is the hub of all things Jamaican and is housed at the Radio City Sports Bar.

JAMAICA-COURT-Government to amend Evidence Act to allow for computer generated evidence

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Jamaica government is moving to amend the Evidence Act to facilitate easy admission of computer generated evidence in cases, Justice Minister Mark Golding has said. “Our provisions in the Evidence Act are antiquated and require quite a convoluted series of steps in terms of proof of the working of the machine, before any computer-generated evidence can be admitted,” Golding said, adding that given the prevalence of computers, the government wants to modernise the provisions and make them more user friendly.

CSEC English Passes Up 11 Per Cent

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Gleaner - The Ministry of Education is reporting an increase in the number of students attaining grades 1-3 in the Caribbean Examination Councils 2013 CSEC exams. Of the 26,529 students sitting this year's English A paper 16,871 attained a passing grade. This represents an 11 per cent increase over last year, which saw 52 per cent of the cohort passing English.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Gleaner - Freshly minted 100m World champion Usain Bolt is delighted to have regained the title he lost two years ago, but admitted disappointment at not testing his own 9.58-second world record in the 100m final at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics inside the Luzhniki Stadium yesterday. I can't complain; it was a good run," Bolt said before noting that soreness in his legs from the previous round changed his priority to simply winning the gold medal without injuring himself. Digicel to abolish US, Caricom roaming charges

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Observer -Digicel will eliminate roaming charges for clients travelling within the US and Caricom, effective October 1, 2013. Phillip Paulwell, Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) president, announced the agreement with the mobile telecoms giant throughout the region on Wednesday at the opening ceremony of the joint CTU, International Telecommunications Caribbean Ministerial Forum on ICT in Port of Spain, Trinidad. "After some negotiation, Digicel has agreed as of October 1, 2013, on the abolition of voice roaming on Digicel's network in Caricom countries.

JAMAICA-POLITICS-Opposition wins by-election

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC - The opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has won Thursday’s by-election in the Cassia Park Division of the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) - the municipal body which runs the affairs of the capital city.
The JLP's Beverly Prince defeated and Sheryn Bromfield of the People's National Party's (PNP).
With just over ten thousand registered voters in the division, there were reports that just over 23% of them went to the polls.
The seat became vacant in May following the death of Bromfield’s mother, Councillor Cynthia Burrell.

JAMAICA-CRIME-Missionaries robbed

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC - The police in the central parish of Manchester have launched an investigation into the early morning robbery of twenty-six missionaries.
The missionaries from God’s Missionary Church in Pennsylvania, in the United States were invited to Jamaica by the Jamaica Holiness Church to work in their vacation Bible School programme.
According to the group’s Youth Pastor, Anthony Harris, masked men entered the premises early Thursday morning.
