Micro-business sector best hope for immediate job growth – Kellier

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Gleaner - Labour Minister Derrick Kellier, on Wednesday, said that the Government was committed to providing the necessary funding support for the small- and micro-business sector.
Kellier, who announced an increase in the amount of funds provided from the National Investment Fund (NIF), under its small- and medium-enterprise credit facility, said mega-investment projects are unlikely to reduce the country's unemployment numbers in the short term.

JAMAICA-AGRICULTURE-Roads in sugar dependent communities to be rehabilitated

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC - Eight contracts totaling just over J$404 million (One Jamaica dollar = US$0.01 cents) have been signed for the rehabilitation of more than 44 kilometres of cane roads in seven sugar-dependent communities across the island.
The road works, which will be undertaken in the central parishes of St. Catherine and Clarendon, the western parish of Westmoreland, the northern parish of Trelawny and the eastern parish of St. Thomas come under the Cane Roads Rehabilitation Project in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

JAMAICA-ECONOMY-Jamaica has passed the worst – Finance Minister

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Finance Minister, Dr. Peter Phillips says the period of difficulty for the country may be over as Jamaica has passed the worst as far as the effects of the structural adjustments are concerned.
However, Phillips who was a guest on a television current affairs programme late Wednesday cautioned that the country is not yet out of the woods.
“There’s definitely pain before gain in the sense that we will have tight budgets for some time to come.”

JAMAICA-POLITICS-Second Knighthood for Governor General

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC - Governor-General, Sir Patrick Allen, has been invested as Knight of Grace of the Order of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem.
This is the second knighthood for the Governor-General, who received the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George from Queen Elizabeth in 2009, when he came to office.
Lord Prior of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, Professor Anthony Mellows, representing the Queen, presided over the investiture ceremony on Monday.

JAMAICA-MEDIA-PAJ withdraws call for removal of TVJ chairman

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC - The Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) Tuesday withdrew its call for the resignation of the chairman of the board of Television Jamaica (TVJ) Milton Samuda. Last weekend, Samuda, temporary stepped down from his position pending the outcome of an investigation into allegations that he had engaged in censorship when he restricted the questions to be asked of two Olympians last month.

School of marijuana – Research facility to be established

(Jamaica Gleaner) - A new research facility to study the scientific benefits of marijuana is to be established jointly in Jamaica by two local universities. Paul Chang, chairman of the Ganja Law Reform Coalition made the disclosure at a Gleaner Editors’ Forum last Wednesday. Chang said the new research centre, which is to be called the Jamaica Cannabis Institute, will be jointly established by the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the University of Technology (UTech).

No jobs for grads - Experts predict almost 20,000 youths leaving school won’t find employment

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Gleaner - Nearly half of the more than 40,000 young people who graduate high schools and universities this year may not find employment in the private sector, two stakeholder groups have predicted.
The forecast by the Jamaica Employers' Federation (JEF) and the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) comes as the economy continues its decline for a sixth consecutive quarter.
"Most employers are either not hiring or not replacing people who are leaving," JEF President David Wan puts it simply.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Jamaica government says it is moving to reduce the cost of cancer treatment on the island and that talks are at an advanced stage with a Canadian hospital for the acquisition of equipment for the public health sector. Health Minister Dr. Fenton Ferguson said that during a recent visit to Canada, he was able to make “significant progress” with the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for the supply of two Linear Accelerator machines, which are used for radiotherapy treatment. “We are closer to achieving our objective of getting two Linear Accelerator machines.

CMI boss bats for trans-shipment port, logistics hub

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Observer- EXECUTIVE Director of the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI) Dr Fritz Pinnock has plans to establish a trans-shipment port and logistics hub in Jamaica as the best business opportunities the country has ever seen.
He, however, urged the Government to devise a sustainable plan that would ensure that Jamaicans are trained to take on the specialised jobs the new business ventures will afford.

On the weekend, Professor Meeks said a more dangerous Middle East is a more dangerous world and inevitably this would lead to even more instability in Jamaica.
