Mr. Secretary-General, Mr. Chairman, Prime Minister Hinds, Colleague Heads of Government, distinguished delegations, Heads of regional and international organisations, Ladies and Gentlemen.

May I begin by thanking the Government and People of the Republic of Guyana, and you, Mr. President, for the excellent arrangements made for this meeting, and for the kind hospitality shown to the Bahamas delegation here in Guyana.

CARICOM TRADE MINISTERS MEET IN GUYANA

Decisions leading to the continued implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) are expected to be made when Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Officials and Ministers of Government responsible for Economic Development meet in Guyana 22-28 May, 2002. The Officials will meet on 22-25 May 2002, while the Ministers will meet on 27-28 May 2002.

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT CONCLUSION OF SIXTH MEETING OF THE COUNCIL FOR HUMAN AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT (COHSOD), 17-19 APRIL 2002, GEORGETOWN, GUYANA

The Sixth Meeting of the Council for Social and Human Development (COHSOD) was held on 17-19 April 2002 in Georgetown, Guyana under the Chairmanship of the Hon. Dr. Douglas Slater, Minister of Health and the Environment, St Vincent and the Grenadines. The Meeting was attended by Dr the Hon. Jerome Walcott, Minister of Health, Barbados; Dr the Hon. Leslie Ramsammy, Minister of Health, Guyana; the Hon. John Junor, Minister of Health, Jamaica; the Hon. Earl Martin, Minister of Health and the Environment, St Kitts and Nevis; the Hon.

CONTRACT SIGNED TO BUILD SECRETARIAT HEADQUARTERS

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General Mr Edwin Carrington expressed his "joy and pleasure" after witnessing today's (17 April 2002) signing of the contract for the construction of a headquarters building for the CARICOM Secretariat.

STATEMENT ON THE MIDDLE EAST ISSUED BY THE THIRD UK-CARIBBEAN FORUM, 3-5 APRIL 2002, GEORGETOWN, GUY

Meeting in Georgetown, Guyana, on the occasion of the Third UK-Caribbean Forum, Ministers declared that the recent upsurge of violence in the Occupied Territories by Israel is unacceptable and can serve no purpose but to undermine the process toward a durable peace settlement. They condemned the attacks against Israeli citizens. They declared that military attacks against Palestinians and against the Headquarters of the President of the Palestinian Authority, Yasser Arafat, and the threat against his person are unacceptable and excessive and must cease immediately.

Four years ago in Nassau, The Bahamas, this Council held its inaugural meeting. The then Chairman counselled that it behoved us to ensure that this body made certain that the Community could no longer carry on with "business as usual."
