CARICOM TRADE MINISTERS AND WTO HEAD TO MEET IN GEORGETOWN, GUYANA

Caribbean Trade Ministers will meet with the Mexican Foreign Minister and the Director General of the World Trade Organisation, (WTO), Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi in Georgetown, Guyana on Friday 28 November, 2003. H.E Ernesto Derbez, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico was the Chairman of the Fifth Session of the WTO Ministerial Conference, which was held in Cancun in early September.

The meeting is scheduled to take place from 3.00 p.m. at the Conference Room of the headquarters of the CARICOM Secretariat, Bank of Guyana Building.

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE THIRD MEETING OF THE PAN CARIBBEAN PARTNERSHIP AGAINST HIV/AIDS, 12-13 NOVEMBER 2003, GEORGETOWN, GUYANA

The Third Annual General Meeting of the Pan-Caribbean Partnership Against HIV/AIDS (PANCAP) was held in Georgetown, Guyana on 12-13 November 2003, under the Chairmanship of the Hon. Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, Minister of Health, Republic of Guyana, assisted by Deputy Chairperson, H.E. Ms. Dolores Balderamas Garcia, Ambassador/Chairperson National AIDS Commission, Belize.


OPENING CEREMONY

The Opening Ceremony was chaired by Dr. Edward Greene, Assistant Secretary-General, Human and Social Development, Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat.

I send you all very fond greetings and best wishes on the occasion of the 3rd Annual General Meeting of the Pan Caribbean Partnership against HIV/AIDS. PANCAP as it is affectionately known, is a very special mechanism endorsed by the Heads of Government of CARICOM as a pillar of the Nassau Declaration which emphasised that the “health of the region is the wealth of the Region".

It is my pleasure to welcome you all on behalf of the Directorate of Human and Social Development. Our Directorate has worked assiduously over the past year to support the flagship activity of the Community, which is the accelerated implementation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy. Many of the activities in which we have been engaged are being discussed at this meeting.

30TH ANNIVERSARY OF CARICOM : A TIME OF HONOURS FOR ITS SECRETARY-GENERAL

CARICOM Secretary-General Edwin Carrington was among 35 members of staff of the CARICOM Secretariat who received awards at a ceremony on 23 July 2003 at Le Meridien Pegasus in Georgetown, Guyana.

It was an extraordinary occasion for the Secretary-General who received two other awards apart from one for 10 years of service. The first was a Special Award for being the “longest serving Secretary-General” having begun his tenure in 1992. Roderick Rainford, his immediate predecessor had served for nine years and was the previous longest serving Secretary-General.
