CARICOM FOREIGN MINISTERS MEET ON CRITICAL INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS ISSUES

An agenda focusing on the Region's strategic approach to its relations with Third States and International Organisations will occupy the attention of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Ministers of Foreign Affairs when they meet in Georgetown, Guyana, from 21-22 May. This will be the Fourth Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) and it is being held under the Chairmanship of Guyana.

I have today received the report of the Chief and Deputy Chief of the CARICOM Electoral Observer Mission to the General Elections in Guyana, on 19 March 2001.

The Mission was established by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), following a request by the President of Guyana that CARICOM monitor the General and Regional elections in that country, which were being held in accordance with agreements reached under the Herdmanston Accord.

CARICOM observer mission expresses confidence in Guyana 2001 elections

Foundations of co-operation have been laid with other missions who are in Guyana to observe the 2001 General elections. This was stated by Chief of the CARICOM Observer Mission to Guyana, Justice R. Carl Rattray at a Press Conference today Thursday March 15 hosted by Secretary General of CARICOM, Mr Edwin Carrington at the CARICOM Secratriat in Georgetown.

HIGH-LEVEL EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY DELEGATION VISITS GUYANA

A high-level delegation from the East African Community (EAC) Secretariat comprising of senior officials from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda was scheduled to arrive last evening on a two-day visit in the country.

One of the main objectives of the study tour is to learn from the experiences of other institutions in regional economic integration, especially regarding their own efforts at achieving internal free trade and the establishment of a Customs Union.

STRENGTHENING THE INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSE TO HIV/AIDS IN THE CARIBBEAN - MEETING TO BEGIN IN TRINIDAD ON THE 1st OF FEBRUARY

On Thursday the Regional HIV/AIDS task force will convene it's  fifth meeting with the specific objective of formulating the plan of action for the European Commission-funded project aimed at strengthening the institutional response to HIV/AIDS/STI in the Caribbean. This meeting, which will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, is also the first of the project advisory group.

STATEMENT ON THE GUYANA-VENEZUELA RELATIONS ISSUED BY THE HEADS OF GOVERNMENT OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM) AND CANADA AT THEIR SIXTH SUMMIT MEETING IN MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA, 19 JANUARY 2001.

Heads of Government of CARICOM and CANADA, at their Sixth Summit Meeting in Montego Bay, Jamaica on January 19, 2001, were briefed by the Government of Guyana on the controversy between Guyana and Venezuela.

The Heads of Government noted that the Government of Venezuela continued to make claims to Guyana's territory.

Let me begin by first extending, on behalf of the Government and people of the Commonwealth of Dominica, a happy and prosperous 2001 to all my colleague Ministers, the Secretary-General, officials, and staff of the CARICOM Secretariat. It is our hope that the year 2001 will be for you and for all of us in CARICOM, a year of greater accomplishments and the fulfilment of hopes and dreams.
