Government claims video showing beating of Cubans in detention centre is false NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas government has described as “a complete falsehood and an outrageous concoction” a video showing Cuban detainees being beaten by officers at a Bahamian detention centre.
Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Fred Mitchell said the government has since referred the matter to its lawyers.
He said he had seen a copy of the video purporting to show the beating at the detention centre and that it is of a news broadcast by a Spanish language TV station in Florida.

In Bahamas, Arthur warns of threats to nation building

Government announces new fiscal measures to help boost local economy

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas government has announced a series of fiscal measures it hopes will turn around an economy that recorded slight growth last year but below the nearly three per cent figure that had been projected. Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Perry Christie, presenting the 2013/14 “Budget Communication” to Parliament late Wednesday, said the prospects for the Bahamian economy in both 2013 and 2014 “remain unchanged from the projections presented in both last year’s Budget Communication and the Mid-Year Budget Statement.

Fire on Royal Caribbean cruise ship cuts short Bahamas trip

(Reuters) – Fire aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship forced it to dock at Freeport, Bahamas, yesterday, with all passengers and crew safe but the rest of the trip cancelled, the cruise company reported. Grandeur of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, was on a seven-night trip that left Baltimore on Friday. The 916-foot-long (280-metre) ship was en route to CocoCay, Bahamas, when a fire occurred in its mooring area early yesterday, the company said in a statement.

BAHAMAS-CRIME-Police appeal for help in apprehending murderers

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – Police are appealing for public assistance in apprehending those involved in the murder of two unidentified people, whose charred remains were found inside a vehicle over the weekend.
Police said that they had responded to a “bush fire” and after extinguishing the blaze, fire fighters discovered the remains.
The police statement gave no details about the identity of the bodies, expect to say they “are appealing to members of the public who may have any information that can assist police in arresting the perpetrators to contact them anonymously”.

US Warns of Armed Robbery Threat in Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas — The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas is warning about the threat of armed robbery in the capital of the island chain off Florida's east coast. A statement from the U.S. Embassy in Nassau advises Americans living in and traveling to the islands to be on heightened alert to avoid being a crime victim. It says "armed robbery remains a major threat" facing Americans in Nassau.

Bahamas beefs up defence force fleet

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas says it will spend an estimated US$200 million acquiring nine medium-to-long range vessels to augment the Royal Bahamas Defence Force’s (RBDF) fleet. National Security Minister Dr. Bernard J. Nottage says he has signed a Letter of Intent with the Netherlands-based DAMEN Shipyards that also includes improvements to the RBDF’s existing bases and harbours and a 70 per cent increase in human capital. “This $200 million venture will represent the single largest investment to date in the Defence Force’s history,” Nottage said.

Bahamas to set up new aviation regulator

KINGSTON, Jamaica - The Bahamas government says it will establish a separate entity to regulate the civil aviation sector in the country.
Prime Minister Perry Christie said his administration will be establishing the Civil Aviation Authority to serve as a regulator, taking away that function from the Civil Aviation Department that also acted as a service provider.
Christie said the government has received funding from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to establish the new entity.
