BAHAMAS-MIGRATION-Government pleased with talks in United States on illegal migration

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell has returned here following a one week visit to the United States saying he was pleased “with the progress” being made regarding the illegal migration of Cubans into the Bahamas.
Prior to his departure for Washington last week, Mitchell had indicated that “a negotiating team would travel to Cuba “with a view to settling the modalities of how there can be a quicker turnaround of migrants to Cuba”.

BAHAMAS-MIGRATION-Government mum on allegations of abuse at detention centre

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas government says it will make no comment regarding allegations of abuse at the Carmichael Road Detention Centre until the official investigation is completed. But Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell has criticised the main opposition Free National Movement (FMN) over comments that Cuban detainees at the facility had been beaten during an escape bid in May. Opposition Leader Dr. Hubbert Minnis told reporters that his party had evidence that at least five Cuban detainees were beaten in May during a failed escape attempt.

BAHAMAS-POLITICS-Opposition politicians to boycott sitting of Parliament

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – Opposition Leader Dr. Hurbert Minnis Wednesday said that opposition legislators would boycott the sittings of Parliament for the period for which he is not permitted to speak during the ongoing debate on legislation to regulate stem cell therapy in The Bahamas.
Minnis in a statement said that during the debate on July 17, Speaker Dr. Kendal Major had requested that he withdraw certain remarks, but had refused to do so, resulting in the Speaker indicating that he would not be allowed to speak for the remainder of the debate on the bill.

Waiting on the United States

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas government says it does not condone, incite or support cruel and inhumane treatment of people and that it is working with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in processing asylum seekers. In a lengthy statement, the Perry Christie government said it wanted to clarify events relating to the detained Cuban nationals in the country as well as “explain the way forward”. It said that the work with the UNCHR is being undertaken in accordance with United Nations treaties, customary international law, and the laws of the Bahamas.

BAHAMAS-UNITED STATES-MARITIME-US Coast Guard investigating vessel explosion off Bahamas

MIAMI, CMC - The United States Coast Guard says it is investigating a report that a vessel exploded 26 miles east of Bimini, in the Bahamas late Tuesday. The Coast Guard said its search-and-rescue coordinators had received a report from the Operation Bahamas Turks and Caicos Operations Center indicating that a 35-foot fishing vessel had exploded after bursting into flames. It said that while the debris had been located, officials had not discovered any body and that a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew is “assisting in the search of the debris field”.

Telecom company denies massive layoff plans

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC -The Bahamas Telecommunications Company Ltd (BTC) has dismissed suggestions by the Bahamas Communications and Public Officers Union (BCPOU) that it is planning “massive” layoffs.

Tourism boost

NASSAU-Bahamas, , CMC – The Bahamas and the United States have signed a Memorandum of Co-operation on Civil Aviation Security for Pre-clearance Operations Transportation Security Administration (TSA) that local officials said would help boost the tourism sector.

Eight found dead off the coast of Grand Bahama

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC - The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of eight bodies on the beach in Grand Bahama early Saturday. They initially found six bodies including that of a child on a beach at Holmes Rock, shortly after, two more bodies were discovered near a sunken boat, half a mile from the shore. According to the police, it’s believed that all eight were illegal immigrants who were trying to make their way to the United States.

Government warns against “defaming” the image of the country

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC - The Bahamas government is urging people from “defaming our country” insisting it is not engaged in any inhumane treatment of people at detention centers in the country. Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell said the Perry Christie has “again learned with regret that demonstrations are to be held in Miami. “The anger of the protesters is misdirected and unfortunate. We do not intend to get into any back and forth with them over this. The Bahamas does not support inhumane treatment of people detained in its facilities.

Premier attends Independence celebrations in The Bahamas

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC - Premier Craig Cannonier and other politicians have flown to the Bahamas to celebrate the country’s 40th anniversary of independence from Britain. Cannonier, was invited to attend official ceremonies hosted Prime Minister Perry Christie. “The Premier has also been in preliminary discussions with the Prime Minister regarding the successes and challenges of their financial model, gaming and concierge services as it relates to the tourism product and business services as well as foreign investment,” a spokeswoman said.
