NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas government says it has launched an investigation into an oil spill incident over the weekend even as Environment Minister Kenred Dorsett said that the spill had been contained.
Dorsett said that more than 200 gallons of fuel had been released into the sea at the Freeport Harbour due to an incident involving an overflow of light diesel from the bunker barge, “Smit Inesita” to the Mt “Butterfly”.

NASSAU, Bahamas - Crews are trying to contain roughly 1,000 gallons (3,785 litres) of oil that spilled into the Atlantic off the northernmost island in the Bahamas, according to the owner of a salvage company in the archipelago. Raymond Darville of Overseas Marine Group Ltd. said the spill occurred early Sunday near an oil and gas storage facility in Freeport Harbor on Grand Bahama island. Darville said he does not know exactly how the spill occurred. But a ship was trying to refuel alongside a barge at the time an oily sheen began to spread near the mouth of the harbour, he said.

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas says it is hoping to use the upcoming Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) Marketplace to boost tourist arrivals to the country. Tourism Minister Obie Wilchombe, speaking at a news conference to launch the January 20-22 event, said the overall goal is to increase the number of stopover visitors in 2013 from 1.6 to 1.8 million, surpassing the record 2008 figure that stood at 1.3 million.

Prime Minister Perry Gladstone Christie said Bahamians have tended not to see the importance of celebrating Majority Rule, even though it is arguably the most important event in the country’s history with the exception of the Abolition of Slavery and Independence.
