BAHAMAS-ECONOMY-Bahamas sign tax agreement with Czech Republic

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas says it has entered into an agreement on the Exchange of Information on Tax Matters (TIEA) with the Czech Republic, the second such accord to be signed with an Eastern European nation. “The Bahamas welcomes the conclusion of this agreement with Czech Republic, a fellow participant in the ongoing efforts to implement the international standards for financial services regulation and cross-border cooperation,” said the Minister of State for Finance Michael Halkitis.

Joint Bahamas, US Efforts “Critical” to Fighting Transnational Crime

Collaborative efforts between the Bahamas and the United States are “critical” to tackling the “constant assault” of transnational crime,” according to Bahamas Foreign Minister Fred Mitchell.

The Minister was speaking this week following the signing of a modification to the letter of agreement on narcotics control and law enforcement first signed between the two countries in 2010.

Bahamas-China Visa Exemption Agreement Officially Begins

The new mutual visa exemption agreement between the Bahamas and China has officially taken effect.

The agreement, which was signed in December 2013, allows Bahamian and Chinese citizens to travel to one another’s country visa-free for up to 30 days. It does not allow the holder to engage in gainful employment, to study or reside in that country, however.

The move could be a boost for Chinese tourism to the Bahamas, particularly in light of the imminent opening of the China-funded Baha Mar resort project in New Providence at the end of this year.

CARICOM deplores threatened economic boycott of The Bahamas

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on Friday said it deplored the threatened economic boycott of The Bahamas and attacks on that country’s economic interests in Florida by interest groups based in Miami.

Cuban nationals detained in Bahamian territorial waters

ASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas government Tuesday confirmed that 13 Cuban nationals had been detained by the Defence Force after they were picked up in territorial waters on Monday night.
Foreign Affairs Minister Frederick Mitchell in a brief statement said that the “illegal migrants are to be transported to Nassau for processing before their return to Cuba”.

Government confirms investigation into abuse of Cuban detainees has been completed

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas government says legal proceedings against people involved in the abuse of Cuban detainees here will begin “imminently”.
National Security Minister Bernard J. Nottage said that the investigations into the allegations of abuse of the Cuban detainees at the Detention Center, conducted by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF), had been completed, “and that proceedings under the Defence Act against the persons implicated in the incident will commence imminently.

BAHAMAS-MIGRATION-Bahamas reiterates commitment to eradicating human trafficking

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas government says it remains committed to the prevention of human trafficking, describing it as one of the fastest growing criminal industries in the country. National Security Minister Bernard J. Nottage addressing the launch of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Technical Skills Training in Human Trafficking said “human trafficking was an obscure activity with little known and little being understood, that was silently festering within our country.
