Bahamas signs MOU with United States on security

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas government says the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to counter-piracy between The Bahamas and the United States will play a critical role in maintaining as well as increasing the country’s position as a leading global Flag State. Transport and Aviation Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin said the initiative would also strengthen The Bahamas’ enforcement reach in volatile shipping areas such as the coast of Somalia and that the country could also benefit from additional economic and national security aspects of the agreement.

Bahamas celebrating 40th anniversary of political independence

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas is celebrating 40 years of political independence from Britain on Wednesday with praises for the founding fathers of the country.
The Bahamas has been staging a series of activities to mark the occasion and Governor General Sir Arthur Foulkes, speaking at the National Pride Day celebrations recalled when Britain’s Prince Charles handed over the Instruments of Independence to then Prime Minister Sir Lynden Pindling.

PM pleased with work of Constitutional Commission

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC - Prime Minister Perry Christie has praised the work of the Constitutional Commission as he accepted its report on the review of the Bahamas Constitution.
“We are so happy to see the emphasis placed by this Commission on consultation with people in our islands, because to too great an extent, because of the capital being here and the majority of people being here and this being the centre of Government, we tend to be Nassau centric.

BAHAMAS-POLITICS-Top US official head to the Bahamas to strengthen cooperation on counter-piracy

WASHINGTON, CMC – The United States Department of State says Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs, Tom Kelly, will travel to the Bahamas this week to “strengthen cooperation on counter-piracy.”
Kelly’s three-day trip, which begins on Monday, involves consultations with senior Bahamian officials on “a wide range of political-military issues and to launch a series of information sharing and technical assistance agreements to meet shared security challenges through strengthened military and law enforcement cooperation.”

BAHAMAS-AVIATION-Government takes over full operations of Grand Bahama International Airport

FREEPORT, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas government Monday took over full control of the operations of the privately owned Airport Control Tower at Grand Bahama International Airport.
“The Bahamas government is today taking over a critical function in aviation services on the island of Grand Bahama which up to this date was privately managed,” said Transport and Aviation Minister Glenys Martin.

Region discussing sustainable growth and development strategies

The driving force behind the two-day meeting that opened Monday is the Caribbean Growth Forum (CGF) - an initiative facilitated by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the World Bank.

Bahamas PM warns crime and political agendas can hinder growth

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The prime minister of this archipelago of islands warns that crime, poor planning and the politicization of development agendas threatens the future viability of Caribbean economies.
Addressing a gathering of leaders from the public and private sectors around the region, Perry Christie said it is important for the people of the Caribbean to “constantly work on exploiting or taking advantage of what makes us unique and different.”
He warned, however that crime remains a troublesome issue to solve.

Artwork from Barbados, Bahamas added to IDB permanent collection

WASHINGTON, CMC, CMC – The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has added three Caribbean paintings to its art collection. The Washington-based financial institution said the Caribbean Country Department (CCB) granted funds to the IDB’s Art Collection for paintings to highlight Caribbean talent. A painting dedication ceremony was held on Wednesday at the IDB headquarters at which “Mimosa pudica” by Bahamian Joscelyn Gardner, and “A New Day” by Rash Ishi Butcher and “Personal Language” by Omar Richardson, both of Barbados, were inaugurated.

CARICOM Foreign ministers on fact finding mission to Turks and Caicos

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) foreign ministers are to visit the Turks and Caicos Islands on a fact finding mission next week.
Bahamas Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell is chairing the grouping that includes his colleagues from Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis and Haiti.
A brief statement issued here said that the ministers “have embarked on a fact-finding mission about the status of the Turks and Caicos Islands” but gave no further details.
