Barbados Minister suggests bigger private sector role in regional standards

Minister of Industry, International Business, Commerce and Small Business Development, Donville Inniss, has called on regional standards bodies to make greater use of the skills offered by the private sector.

He made this suggestion while delivering the feature address at the opening ceremony of the 32nd Meeting of the Council of the CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ) at the Accra Beach Hotel and Spa in Rockley, Christ Church.

 

National Drug Observatories critical to the fight against drugs in CARICOM

The critical importance of Drug Observatories (DOs) was underscored at the Opening of the Regional Seminar for Drug Observatories in the Caribbean on 4 April 2018, in Georgetown, Guyana. The importance of international cooperation and synergies in the fight against illicit drugs was emphasized also to the gathering mainly of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) practitioners, policy makers and researchers in the field.

Successor Cotonou Agreement must take into account Region’s vulnerabilities – CARIFORUM Council of Ministers

The successor to Cotonou Partnership Agreement between the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) States and the European Union must take into account the inherent and exogenous vulnerabilities of the Caribbean Forum of the ACP States (CARIFORUM) as critical elements in the negotiations.

A Statement of the CARIFORUM Council of Ministers said that successor agreement also had to the take into account the development priorities of the ACP, including CARIFORUM’s priorities, and must aim at sustainable, inclusive and resilient development of the ACP regions.

Slovenia, CARICOM forging closer relations

The Republic of Slovenia and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) are moving to further deepen relations.

New Ambassador of Slovenia to CARICOM, His Excellency Stanislav Vidovič, in a ceremony for the presentation of his credentials to Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, Wednesday, pointed to several areas for closer cooperation including sustainable development, environmental issues, climate change and economic integration.

PM Gaston Browne and Cabinet sworn in

The Hon. Gaston Browne was on Thursday sworn in as Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda for the second time, following his landslide victory in general election held on Wednesday, 21 March, 2018. Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin and other Cabinet members were also sworn into office on Thursday.

 

The Prime Minister led his Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) to victory in yesterday’s General Elections, winning 15 of the 17 seats at stake, according to the preliminary results issued by electoral officials.
