CARIFORUM Regional Adolescent Training Workshops opens:  Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation critical to advance economic development

Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat Assistant Secretary-General (ASG), Dr. Douglas Slater, emphasised the critical link between human resource development and economic development and, in this regard, the importance of treatment and rehabilitation for persons with problematic drug use and misuse. The ASG was speaking at the Opening of the Regional Adolescent Training Workshop earlier today, in Trinidad and Tobago.

After record Sargassum influx, CRFM initiates fact-finding study in CARICOM States

The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) has initiated a regional fact-finding study to document the record-breaking influx of Sargassum seaweed in the Caribbean Sea in 2018, and the impacts this phenomenon has been having on countries in the region since 2011.

The fact-finding survey is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), that has coordinated official development assistance from Japan to CARICOM States for over two decades.

CARICOM draft Model School Drug Policy to be developed Workshop opens in Saint Lucia

More than 20 representatives from government ministries and non-governmental organisations in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) are attending a regional workshop to develop a draft Model School Drug Policy. The workshop opened on 21 January 2019, in Castries.

The use of licit and illicit substances, including alcohol; inhalants; and marijuana has been increasing, particularly by students across the Region.

Crime and Security – a regional problem…  CARICOM SG tells Caribbean Youth Violence Prevention Summit

Caribbean Community, (CARICOM) Ambassador Irwin La Rocque, called for the full cooperation of all stakeholders within Member States to respond to the issue of crime and security, which he described as a regional problem that demands a regional solution.

“The multi-state, multi sectoral response to this challenge is vital for us to succeed in defeating it” [crime], the Secretary-General said.

Youth must be equal partners – CARICOM SG

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin Larocque, speaking at the Caribbean Summit on Youth Violence Prevention which opened earlier today, in Georgetown reminded youth from across the Caribbean that they were “equal partners in the struggle”.

“Fora such as these provide an opportunity for our youth to be fully involved in providing solutions to problems that affect them”, the Secretary-General said.

UN commends CARICOM’s electoral processes

United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator (Guyana), Ms Mikiko Tanaka, has commended the CARICOM Region for making “important progress” in the conduct of periodic and genuine elections.

She expressed those sentiments while also lauding the important role the CARICOM Secretariat played in consolidating democratic processes through the conduct of election observation missions.

The CARICOM Committee of Ambassadors is holding its 8th meeting in Guyana, Thursday, with heightened expectations of the group following the ground-breaking Special Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government on the CSME, in Trinidad and Tobago earlier this week.

Tackle CSME issues head on, urges Prime Minister Holness

CARICOM Chairman, Prime Minister Andrew Holness of Jamaica has urged the  ‘head on’  tackling of complex issues during the Special CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting on the CSME, taking place in Trinidad and Tobago.

The two-day meeting, which wraps up on Tuesday, is addressing the rate of implementation of the CSME and making sure its benefits are available for Community nationals.

“The issues slated for discussion at this Special Meeting of the Conference are of varying complexity,” Prime Minister Holness noted.
