CARICOM Secretary-General discusses stronger cooperation with Head of IICA

Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque met with Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) Manuel Otero, Thursday morning for discussions on strengthening cooperation.

The meeting was one of the Secretary-General’s engagements during Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) which opened in Barbados, Wednesday night.

Facilitating Intra-Regional Agri-Food Trade

This Brief:

  • Informs of the recent study on Non-Tariff Measures (NTM) and Non-Tariff Barriers (nTB), and their impacts on intra-regional agri-food trade.
  • Clarifies, in a concise manner, the context of this long-standing issue and the difference between nTMs and nTBs.
  • Calls for consensus on the need for, and  type of concerted actions to be taken to ‘systematically dismantle’ as opposed to ‘eliminate’ these nTBs within CARICOM.

CARICOM saddened by loss of life after earthquake in Haiti

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is deeply saddened by the loss of life following the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on Sunday 7 October, 2018. At least 15 people were killed and more than 300 were injured.

In a message to Haiti President, His Excellency Jovenel Moise, CARICOM Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque extended condolences the families who lost loved ones.

Haiti struck by deadly earthquake

(BBC) At least 10 people have been killed by an earthquake that struck off the north of Haiti, officials say.

The magnitude 5.9 quake was one of the strongest to hit the Caribbean nation since a major tremor in 2010 killed more than 200,000 people.

Several buildings are reported to have been destroyed. President Jovenel Moise has urged people to remain calm.

Government spokesman Eddy Jackson Alexis said a disaster response task force had been set up.
