TURKS&CAICOS ISLANDS-ECONOMY-Britain agrees no VAT for TCI

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and CAICOS Islands, CMC - Britain says it will not impose a Value Added Tax (VAT) in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) after both the government and the opposition said they were against the tax measure. Foreign and Commonwealth Minister with responsibility for the Caribbean, Mark Simmonds, in a letter to Premier Dr. Rufus Ewing, however indicated that London is of the view that the TCI government has a responsibility to ensure sound finances in the British Overseas Territory.

TURKS&CAICOS ISLANDS-POLITICS-Date for by-election announced

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks and Caicos, CMC – Voters in the Cheshire Hall and Richmond Hills constituency will elect a new parliamentary representative on February 22 in a by-election that could possibly result in a change of government in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI). Following the November 1 elections last year, the Progressive National Party (PNP) held a one seat majority over the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) but a court ruling last week, meant that both parties now held eight seats each in the Parliament.

Government formally requests extradition of former premier

PROVIDENCIALS, Turks and Caicos, CMC – The Turks and Caicos Islands government has formally requested the extradition of former premier Michael Misick from Brazil, where he has been in prison since his arrest on December 7 last year.
A brief statement by Attorney General Huw Shepheard, noted that “the formal request” had been lodged with the Brazilian government on Tuesday”.
“The Turks and Caicos Islands’ Chief Magistrate and the acting Attorney General formally certified the papers last week and they were taken to Brazil on Sunday.

UK formally requests extradition of former TCI Premier

PROVIDENCIALS, Turks and Caicos Islands, CMC -The United Kingdom has made a request for the extradition of former Turks and Caicos Premier Michael Misick who is being held in a Brazilian jail following after his December arrest in the South American nation on an international warrant.
Under an agreement with Brazil,  the British authorities have 60 days from the date of arrest to formally request his extradition said the Turks and Caicos Islands’ (TCI) Attorney General’s office said in a statement Wednesday.

Family of former premier appeals for his return home

PROVIDENCIALS, Turks and Caicos Islands, CMC – The family of former Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) premier, Michael Misick, has launched a local and international appeal for the former head of government who is in a Brazilian jail to be allowed to return to the British Overseas Territory.
Misick, 46, was arrested last December as a result of an international arrest warrant issued by INTERPOL and a further warrant issued by Brazilian Supreme Court.

CARICOM electoral observer mission to the by-elections in the Turks and Caicos Islands, 4–9 august 2003 : Preliminary statement

The CARICOM Electoral Observer Mission was mounted at the invitation of the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands to monitor the conduct of the by-elections in Five Cays and South Caicos on 7 August 2003.

In the Mission’s assessment, the by-elections were conducted in a free and peaceful manner and good spirit. The process was transparent and the secrecy of the ballot was respected. The polling officials managed the process fairly and competently. The vote count was carried out accurately and efficiently in the presence of the candidates and their agents.
