Public health high on CARICOM heads agenda

PUBLIC Health is being placed high on the agenda as regional leaders meet in Grenada for the Thirty-Eighth Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
The conference will open today with a grand ceremony at the Grenada Trade Centre, subsequent to which Heads of Government will move to the Radisson Grenada Beach Resort, in Grand Anse, for two days of business sessions.

Caribbean Community to push for strong outcome at critical UN Oceans Conference

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will participate actively and pursue positive outcomes at the 5-9 June 2017 High Level United Nations Conference, which is expected to agree on a Call For Action to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. The Conference supports implementation of  Goal 14 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to transform the world –  part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by world leaders in 2015.

Regional Heads call for urgent meeting of COTED to address air transport issues

Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have called for an urgent meeting of the Council for Trade and Development (COTED), to address air transport issues in particular, those that affect the tourism sector.

Making this announcement on Friday was CARICOM’s Chairman, President David Granger at a press conference to mark the conclusion of the 28th Inter-sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM.
The two-day confabulation was held at the Marriott and the Pegasus Hotels in Kingston, Georgetown, Guyana.

CARICOM heads approve draft ICT space roadmap

A roadmap towards creating a single ICT Space for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is being tabled at the 28th Inter-sessional CARICOM summit for the approval of the Conference of Heads of Government.

The Conference is meeting in Georgetown, Guyana to deliberate on a number of critical issues including regional security, economic development and international relations.

CARICOM heads to be briefed on CSME review

The CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), crime and security and correspondent banking are among the issues to be discussed at CARICOM’s 28th Intercessional Heads of Government meeting.

The two-day meeting will be hosted in Guyana at the CARICOM Secretariat, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara on February 16 and 17.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is deeply distressed at the violence which broke out in Dominica following a public meeting on Tuesday, 7 February.

CARICOM recognizes the right of citizens to engage in peaceful protest. However, the Community condemns the vandalism which resulted in the destruction of private property and businesses.

The Community urges all to act with restraint and maintain the orderly and peaceful society to which Dominicans and the wider Community are accustomed.

CARICOM - Regional conference to tackle childhood obesity

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Feb 9, CMC – Representatives of regional health organisations are meeting here this week to map out a plan to prevent childhood obesity through improved food and nutrition security.

The two-day high-level meeting is being hosted by the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in response to growing concerns among the region’s health officials that 20-30 percent of the Caribbean’s children are overweight or obese.
