Approximately fifty immigration officers are to be trained in Saint Lucia this week on issues related to the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) and the free movement of skilled CARICOM nationals. This is part of a series of training workshops facilitated by the CARICOM Secretariat which seek to ensure immigration officers are equipped to carry out their duties regarding the free movement of persons.
CASTRIES, St. Lucia, July 26, 2016 – Across the Caribbean, policymakers rely heavily on the availability of timely, accurate and reliable poverty data to support national and regional development initiatives. Despite making considerable progress on how they measure poverty, many countries in the Region do not frequently update or report on key poverty indicators, and are not able to assess the non-income dimensions of poverty and human development.

Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Member States have agreed to develop strategies that promote buy-in and early adoption of the establishment of a Regional Energy Efficiency Building Code (REEBC) and a Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS). The REEBC and the MEPS are expected to be submitted to the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) in November, 2017.
The necessity to underpin any action towards growth, development and empowerment of the peoples of CARICOM with statistically sound evidence has been the consistent rallying cry of statisticians. Regionally, there is an increasing demand for better data to inform decision-making. But that demand has exposed deficiencies in the statistical offices and has prompted undertakings to better equip statistical offices with the tools, human and otherwise, to do the job.

On Thursday, July 21, the first of a series of one-day CSME sensitization workshops kicks off in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Approximately 35 participants from the private sector and rural communities will convene at the Beachcombers Hotel for information sharing and dialogue regarding the CSME.
