CARICOM STATEMENT ON THE MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA ISSUED BY THE TWENTY-SECOND INTER-SESSIONAL MEETING OF THE CONFERENCE OF HEADS OF GOVERNMENT OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM), 25-26 FEBRUARY 2011, ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) observes, with grave concern, the recent developments in the Middle East and North Africa, which have been sparked by the desire of the people of that Region for change. The Community expresses deep regret at the loss of life during the peaceful demonstrations.

STATEMENT ON THE PROCLAMATION OF OFFICIAL RESULTS OF THE FIRST ROUND OF THE LEGISLATIVE AND PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS OF HAITI BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE CONFERENCE OF HEADS OF GOVERNMENT OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY, THE HON TILLMAN THOMAS, PRIME MINISTER OF GRENADA

The Caribbean Community welcomes the announcement by the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) of Haiti of the official results of the first round of the presidential and legislative elections in that Member State. In congratulating the candidates who will contest the presidential and legislative run-offs, the Community also commends all those who participated in the elections for their commitment to the strengthening and continuation of democratic principles in this Member State of the Caribbean Community.

SEMINAR ON CARICOM FOR HAITIAN PRIVATE SECTOR ON WEDNESDAY

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) A two day Seminar for the Haitian private sector on the management of CARICOM trade is due to begin on Wednesday 2nd February at the Karibe Hotel, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The Seminar is being organized by the CARICOM Representation Office in Haiti and the Bureau de Coordination et de Suivi des Accords de la CARICOM, de l’OMC et de la ZLEA, of the Government of Haiti.

I congratulate the Board of the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) and its General Manager, Mrs. Marlene Street-Forrest for organizing what portends to be a most exciting Conference.

The timing is opportune as the Caribbean struggles for survival in a changed and most uncertain global economic environment and as the international community struggles to help Haiti rebuild after the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010.

I consider this Conference to be both visionary and timely.

PATTERSON DESCRIBES DUVALIER’S RETURN TO HAITI AS PRECIPITOUS
