REMARKS BY AMBASSADOR IRWIN LAROCQUE, SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM) AT THE TWENTY-SECOND MEETING OF THE COUNCIL FOR HUMAN AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT (COHSOD) ON YOUTH CULTURE AND SPORTS 2 FEBRUARY 2012, GEORGETOWN, GUYANA

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) I am very pleased to address my first Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) as Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community. The COHSOD has always been and continues to be a critical vehicle for examining and assessing the development of our human resources within the Region. It continues to provide dynamic leadership for national and regional development by ensuring that effective policies in human and social development are formulated and implemented.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) As Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport for Guyana, charged with the responsibility of chairing this Twenty-Second Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development, it is my pleasure to welcome you to this Meeting and to my country. I hope that will you find some time outside of this forum to experience the warmth and hospitality of Guyana, which is rooted in the rich cultural heritage and diversity of our people.

CARICOM SECRETARY-GENERAL RE-AFFIRMED COMMITMENT TO YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque reaffirmed his commitment to working with the young peoples of the Caribbean Region to empower them to realize their dreams and aspirations.

The Secretary-General told the 22nd Meeting of the Council of Human and Social Development (COHSOD) which opened in Georgetown, Guyana on Thursday morning that youth empowerment was integral to the success of the regional integration movement.

PEOPLE MUST REMAIN AT THE CENTRE OF INTEGRATION - SG LAROCQUE

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) His Excellency Ambassador Irwin LaRocque told His Excellency Robert Morris, the new Barbados Ambassador to CARICOM that his vast experience in the labour movement would serve the Community well, “particularly as we strive to ensure that people remain at the centre of our integration movement.”

One has the comfortable feeling that one is welcoming a close relative home to talk about family matters, and Barbados, a founding father, is undoubtedly a very integral part of the CARICOM family.

G LAROCQUE MEETS WITH AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Ambassador Irwin LaRocque welcomes Australian Parliament Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs, Mr. Richard Marles, MP to the headquarters of the CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana. Mr Marles is on a fact finding visit to the region and has visited several CARICOM Member States including Jamaica, St Vincent and Guyana.
