CARICOM SECRETARY-GENERAL WANTS A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE FOR RURAL WOMEN IN CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, has called for a recommitment of efforts to provide the enabling environment that would improve the quality of life of rural women.

In statement to mark International Women’s Day 2012, Ambassador LaRocque stressed the importance of addressing the special needs of rural women and girls as this he stated was very important to “Caribbean development, gender equality in the Region and the sustainability of development gains.”

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Honourable Heads of Government, High Officials and Dignitaries of State Officers of CARICOM Friends, it is my honour and pleasure to welcome you to the Republic of Suriname. Today is March 8, International Women's Day and also the Celebration of Holi Phagwah, both auspicious occasions for us in this Region.

CARICOM HEADS OF GOVERNMENT HALF-YEARLY MEETING - CARICOM LEADERS SAY CHANGE MUST COME ... IT WILL COME

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The 23rd half-yearly meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government opened this morning in Surname, with a resolve from leaders that change must be the order of the day.

The opening ceremony was addressed by Chairman of the Conference, His Excellency Desiré Delano Bouterse, President of the Republic of Suriname; Outgoing Chairman, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas, and the Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque.

CARICOM CHAIRMAN CALLS FOR NEW BEGINNINGS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) His Excellency Desiré Delano Bouterse, the President of Suriname has called for a new beginning to the regional movement.

Delivering an address on Thursday at the Opening Ceremony of the 23rd Inter-sessional Meeting of the CARICOM Heads of Government, President Bouterse said CARICOM was at a rare historical moment “when we are called upon to make new beginnings.”

The St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister was addressing CARICOM Heads of Government and their delegations at the Opening Ceremony of their 23rd half-yearly Meeting, in Paramaribo, Suriname.

CARICOM LEADERS HAIL CONTRIBUTION OF REGION’S WOMEN

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) All three speakers at the Opening Session of the 23rd Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) paid tribute to the women of the Region as the opening day of the meeting coincided with the observance of International Women’s Day, 8 March.

CARICOM LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN MATERIALS ON GENDER BASED VIOLENCE

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community Secretariat dovetailed the half-yearly meeting of CARICOM Conference of Heads of Government to launch a variety of creative products that it intends to use in a public education campaign against Gender-Based Violence.

And what opportune time to build awareness on violence against women but on March 8, International Women’s Day (IWD 2012)!
