Dottin takes action

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - COMMISSIONER OF POLICE Darwin Dottin has taken legal action against the Attorney General (AG) and the Police Service Commission (PSC) over his forced retirement. According to sources, Dottin’s legal team, headed by Elliott Mottley, QC, yesterday filed suit in the High Court challenging the decision to remove the Commissioner from office Monday.

Jamaica backs FAO call for a hunger-free world

KINGSTON, Jamaica- JAMAICA has supported a call, led by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), for the eradication of hunger and malnourishment in the world.
Speaking at the 38th Session of the FAO's Conference at its headquarters in Rome, Italy on Tuesday, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Roger Clarke said "Jamaica underscores our commitment to totally eradicating hunger by 2025, and welcomes the focus and initiatives of the FAO in pursuing our shared goal of a hunger-free world."

Guyana benefits from EU sugar grant

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Guyana is receiving more than Euro 23 million (One Euro = US$1.29 cents) from the European Union under an initiative that has so far provided nearly Euro 100 million as sector policy budget support.
Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh and the EU’s Ambassador here, Robert Kopecky signed the financing agreement for the Guyana Annual Action Programme 2012 on Accompanying Measures on sugar.

Former Guyana President to lead Commonwealth Expert Group on Climate Finance

LONDON, CMC-Bharrat Jagdeo , the former President of Guyana has been invited to lead a high level team of experts to identify solutions for unlocking resources to enable climate-vulnerable Commonwealth countries to combat climate change. Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma on Thursday announced that Jagdeo will be joined by eight others to press the international community to help identify practical solutions for those countries most vulnerable to climate change.

Regional credit rating agency downgrades St. Lucia

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC-Persistent and severe deterioration in government’s fiscal position and a resultant steady increase in debt stock are among reasons which the Caribbean Information and Credit Rating Services Limited (CariCRIS) has cited for its decision to downgrade St Lucia’s credit ratings.
CariCRIS is a regional credit rating agency, with a market-driven initiative aimed at fostering and supporting the development of regional debt markets.

Bharath: CAL looking to deal with spending

World Bank gives Haiti US$20 million to tidy public records

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - THE World Bank has given US$20 million to Haiti for cleaning up its public resources and making them more transparent.
The grant will help Haiti improve public financial management, procurement practices and performance of the national electrical company. It will also create a tracking system to monitor budgets and a single treasury account to manage funds.
