Regional stakeholders meet in Barbados to discuss energy project

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC - Caribbean Community (CARICOM) stakeholders in the field of energy, as well as other partners are active in the regional energy sector will meet in Barbados on Thursday to discuss initiatives and activities identified as part of the Caribbean Sustainable Energy Roadmap and Strategy (C-SERMS) Phase 1 Study.
The C-SERMS Resource Mobilisation Forum which will be hosted by the Guyana-based CARICOM Secretariat, with support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the German government through its Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

Jamaica passes legislation to tighten measures dealing with human trafficking

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Jamaica parliament has approved the legislation dealing with human trafficking less than a month after the United States placed the island on a Tier Two status for not fully complying with the minimum standards set by the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act. National Security Minister Peter Bunting successfully piloted the Human Trafficking Bill that which will make provision for restitution to victims of human trafficking and lead to increased penalties for crimes classified as human trafficking.

EDITORIAL - Tough sentences alone won’t do

KINGSTON, Jamaica - MOST PEOPLE, we expect, will welcome the harsher penalties as well as the new offences introduced into the law against human trafficking. For our Government, this week's approval by the House of Representatives of the amendments is a signal to the United States that we are serious about the issue. We will, hopefully, now be rewarded by Washington with Jamaica, if not being completely removed, being placed in a lower-grade watch list of countries deemed not to be doing enough about the problem.

Attorney hails moves in US to legalise online gambling

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The lead counsel for Antigua and Barbuda in the ongoing Internet gaming dispute with the United States, says the island could benefit from moves by American legislators to legalise online gambling within the United States borders. “This is of considerable benefit to us …It vindicates what we have said all along,” said Mark Mendel, referring to the new legislation introduced by US Congressman Peter King in June. If passed, The Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act of 2013 would federally legalise online gambling in the US.

Eighty-nine for CARIFESTA

ST JOHN’S, Antigua- Close to 100 artists, musicians, entertainers and performers are down to perform at the  Caribbean Festival of Arts, CARIFESTA.
But Culture Minister Elston Adams says it has not been finalized how much the country’s participation will cost.
He told Observer Media that the CARIFESTA planning committee is meeting today to advance plans for the August 16 to 26 event.

Officials still assessing damage caused by tornado

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua, CMC – Antigua and Barbuda authorities were on Wednesday assessing the damage caused by a tornado that touched down in the north-east of the island.
Director of the National Office of Disaster Services, Philmore Mullin, said it is still too early to determine the cost of the damage caused by the weather system late Tuesday close to Long Island, located about two miles off the north-east coast of Antigua.

Bahamas celebrating 40th anniversary of political independence

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas is celebrating 40 years of political independence from Britain on Wednesday with praises for the founding fathers of the country.
The Bahamas has been staging a series of activities to mark the occasion and Governor General Sir Arthur Foulkes, speaking at the National Pride Day celebrations recalled when Britain’s Prince Charles handed over the Instruments of Independence to then Prime Minister Sir Lynden Pindling.

JLP serious about suspending relations with CARICOM — Holness

KINGSTON, Jamaica - OPPOSITION Leader Andrew Holness says that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) believes that Jamaica should consider suspending its relationship with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) until it sorts out current issues with the regional body.
"There could be a suspension until we get our house in order, so that we can participate on equal footing with everyone," Holness told the Jamaica Observer at this week's Monday Exchange.
