Schools ordered closed as St Lucia prepares for Tropical Storm Chantal

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC- The Government has ordered the closure of all schools by noon and throughout Tuesday as the country prepares for the passage of Tropical Storm Chantal. According to a government statement, the schools will remain closed until Wednesday morning, unless advised otherwise. Prime Minister Kenny Anthony, is expected to chair a pre- strike meeting of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) on Monday and preparations have begun to ensure that all hurricane shelters are available especially for persons living in flood prone areas.

Local emergency services on full alert

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Local emergency services here have been placed on full alert as Tropical Storm Chantal races towards the Lesser Antilles. In preparation, the Department of Emergency Management plans to activate the emergency operations centre at 9:30 pm (local time) and also open Category One shelters from 6:00 pm to facilitate persons who wish to shelter there. Deputy Director, Kerry Hinds told reporters that a pre-strike meeting which involved all key emergency personnel was held at the Emergency Operations center on Monday morning.

St. Lucia to hold talks with British government on membership to CCJ

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – St. Lucia’s Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony says his government will hold talks with Britain in keeping with the island’s constitution, as it seeks to join the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) established in 2001 to replace the London-based Privy Council as the region’s final court.

Regional governments concerned over removal of President in Egypt

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) governments say they are concerned over the removal of the democratically elected president in Egypt and expressed the hope that democracy would be reinstated soon in the country. The regional governments who met in Trinidad and Tobago last week for their 34th annual summit, have also expressed concerns over the detention of President Mohammed Morsi and members of his Mislum Brotherhood party.

Henry hopes CARICOM reparation fight won’t fall flat

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Long-time reparation activist and parliamentarian Mike Henry is applauding the move of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to pursue reparations for native genocide and slavery.
On Saturday, wrapping up the four-day 34th Heads of Government Conference held in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, the Caribbean leaders agreed on follow-up action in regard to the matter.

Recompense integral to growth - Antigua PM

Some may suggest that it would be better to improve the sturdiness of the current structure before looking to add more weight, so to speak.

T&T to develop mango industry

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Guardian - Although there were challenges in developing the mango industry and by extension food production, T&T has the potential to develop it into a viable industry said Dr Mario Fortune, chief technical officer, Ministry of Food Production. “The mango industry, like other food markets in T&T, suffers from two main problems. There is an inconsistent supply and inconsistent quality. Why do we rely so heavily on imported food? One issue is that you can get imported fruits in any quantity you need all year round and you are assured of a certain quality.
