More than 1,000 show up for Haiti anti-gay protest

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- More than 1,000 people in Haiti participated Friday in a rare street demonstration to protest homosexuality and a proposal to legalize gay marriage in the Caribbean nation. The protest brought together a mix of religious groups, from Protestant to Muslim, who carried anti-gay placards and chanted songs, including one in which they threatened to burn down parliament if its members make same-sex marriage legal. A Haitian gay rights group has said it plans to submit a proposal allowing homosexuals to wed.

Junior minister on a fast for “soul of the nation”

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Rodger Samuel Monday began a week long fast “for the soul of the nation” amid growing speculation here that he is preparing to quit the Trinidad and Tobago government. “I believe there is some force that is attempting to steal the soul of Trinidad and Tobago, and I need to beseech God to save the soul of the nation. Too much is happening and too much has happened over the years,” Samuel said in a newspaper interview published here.

Opposition Leader comments on political impasse in St. Kitts-Nevis

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC - St. Vincent and the Grenadines Opposition Leader Arnhim Eustace is calling on St. Kitts-Nevis Prime Minister Dr. Denzil Douglas to have parliament debate a motion of no confidence in his administration without delay.
“You know, there is a creeping thing which is happening in these islands now. You had it in Grenada, you have it in St. Kitts now and we have it here too,” Eustace said at a protest meeting of his New Democratic Party (NDP) over the weekend.

Disagreement within government over smoking ban

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – There seems to be disagreement within the ruling People’s National Party (PNP) government over the implementation of a ban on smoking in public places.
Former national security minister and government senator, K.D. Knight, has said he is prepared to join people in protesting the measure and wants the issue debated in Parliament.
But Attorney General Patrick Atkinson has told the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper that “the real concern is not about debating in Parliament.

Task force to examine impact of smoking ban on tourism

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC - With the recent implementation of a ban on smoking in public places, Tourism Minister, Dr. Wykeham McNeil has announced that an inter-ministry task force will take a look at concerns about implications of the ban in the hotel sector. The decision to convene the task force was made at a meeting on Friday between representatives of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), the Tourism Ministry and the Health Ministry. The hotel sector has complained that the regulations could cause a major fall out in the sector.
