SIDS need funds

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - SMALL ISLAND DEVELOPING STATES (SIDS) still have difficulty accessing funds, and Minister of the Environment and Drainage Dr Denis Lowe says it impacts on their ability to reach some of their development objectives.
Lowe called for “the provision of new additional and predictable sources of financing for sustainable development for SIDS and the simplification of access criteria to new and existing international funds, given the capacity constraints of SIDS”.

ACS secretary general Alfonso Múnera on: Linking Colombia and T&T

Government extends tax concessions to first time home owners

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, , CMC – The St. Kitts-Nevis government says it will extend the tax concessions granted to first time home owners as its seeks to boost growth in the construction sector and stimulate the local economy. “Over the last two and a half years, government has extended the policy which was originally due to come to an end in April of 2012. Since then, this policy to assist poor and middle class families has been further extended on two occasions and ought to have expired in July 2013,” said Information Minister Nigel Carty.

Prime Minister and Attorney General threaten legal action in “emailgate” scandal

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC –Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar and her Attorney General Anand Ramlogan have filed pre-action protocol letters against Opposition leader Dr. Keith Rowley as the fall out continues over the “emailgate” scandal in Trinidad and Tobago. Attorney Donna Prowell in the letter bars Rowley from repeating the statements or making “any similar defamatory statements,” failing which the parties will “immediately seek injunctive relief before the High Court” without notice to him. Rowley has 14 days to respond to the letter.

SIDF sells shares to Swiss investor

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – The state-owned Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation (SIDF) has sold its shares in a company involved in a resort project here for more than EC$50 million (One EC dollar =US$0.37 cents) to a Swiss investor, Information Minister Nigel Carty has announced. “The SIDF has indicated that it does not wish to be involved long-term in the resort project, and having now seen the implementation of the construction phase of the project, has recently agreed to sell its share in the project to a Swiss investor in excess of EC$50 million,” Carty said.
