Role for public, private sectors in agriculture sector development

There are important investment roles for both the public and private sector in the Region’s quest to be competitive, for import substitution, alleviation of food security risks and for increased contribution to economic development.

Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the Caribbean Week of Agriculture 2016 in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, CARICOM Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque said the opportunities were there for those who were willing to take it.

Investment, partnerships critical to agriculture

Agriculture requires investment for the sector to flourish and be sustained, and policy-makers must create the environment which is attractive to investors. Policies and programmes that facilitate ongoing development, stimulate economic growth within the Region and promote food security also have to be put in place as a priority.

PM Outlines Action Plan For Aid To Haiti And Bahamas

The Honourable Prime Minister and Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit, on Friday, outlined a plan of action to be taken by member states in aid of Haiti and the Bahamas.

The Honourable Prime Minister held a press conference on Friday, October 14th, to report on his visit to the two islands following Hurricane Matthew.

At the press conference the CARICOM Chairman revealed that in Haiti two towns in the west were severely affected; Les Cayes and Jeremie.

He also spoke of deaths associated with an outbreak of cholera in Haiti.

Region observes Caribbean Statistics Day

Caribbean Statistics Day will be observed on Saturday, 15 October, 2016, ahead of World Statistics Day on 20 October. The theme of Caribbean Statistics Day is Improving the Lives of People – Advancing the Action Plan for Statistics in CARICOM. For the past eight years, the Region has been observing the Day that was identified to create more awareness of the production, dissemination and use of statistics in decision-making.

CARICOM Chair and SG meet Haiti’s Interim President

CARICOM Chairman, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica and Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque met on Tuesday with the interim President of hurricane devastated Haiti H.E Jocelerme Privert.

The Chairman and Secretary-General are in Haiti for a first hand look at the devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew, which hit the country last week with winds of up to 145 miles an hour and torrential rains, leaving hundreds dead and thousands displaced.
