Crime and Violence as a Public Health Issue
The Government of Trinidad and Tobago, in collaboration with the CARICOM Secretariat, convened a Regional Symposium on Crime and Violence as a Public Health Issue on 17–18 April 2023 to address the issue of crime and violence within the Caribbean Region. Following the symposium, the Heads of Government issued two declarations from which a five-pillar Consolidated Framework was derived. The Framework outlines the actions, lead and supporting agencies, and time frames for intersectoral cooperation actions to mitigate the escalating violence.
The framework was presented to the Fiftieth Annual General Meeting of the Regional Nursing Body (RNB) and circulated to the members of the RNB for input. Following the meeting, a recommendation was made to convene a Technical Working Group (TWG) led by Chief Medical Officers, to develop a Logic Model using the Public Health Approach in support of the Framework. The work of the TWG will be supported by PAHO/WHO.
