CSME TO BOOST ARTISTIC EXPRESSION

Aug 04, 2004

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary General, Mr. Edwin Carrington says one aim of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) is the creation of a single economic space within which artists can continue to express and strengthen the Region's unique culture and shared identity. Mr. Carrington was speaking at the Secretariat's Georgetown headquarters on Wednesday (August 4) during a function, which featured readings and reasoning by Barbadian poet, Dr. Cynthia Wilson from her new collection of works, The Hibiscus Bears a Blue Flower.

Describing the event a "festival of words" and a reflection of the author's talents, thoughts and works, Mr. Carrington said the CARICOM Secretariat was pleased to facilitate the book launch as an extended expression and celebration of the Region's talent.

He named other Barbadian literary icons such as Kamau Brathwaite, Frank Collymore and George Lamming among the authors who have significantly impacted the world with their work, and with the rhythm and richness that make them uniquely Caribbean.

Mr. Carrington noted that CARICOM is in transition to a truer emancipation for its peoples, and he added, "It is that emancipation that we are working towards in the creation of a CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) as we work for the removal of historical/colonial shackles and for the dawn of economic and social freedom."
