CARICOM Secretary-General advocates for bridging gap between youth and decision-makers at SIDS Global Child and Youth Action Summit

May 28, 2024

On 26 May, Dr Carla Barnett, Secretary General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), participated in the Closing Ceremony of the Small Island Developing (SIDS) Global Child and Youth Action Summit (CYAS). The ceremony acknowledged the contributions of delegates, observers, and dignitaries throughout the summit and charted a course for future action.

Dr Barnett facilitated a discussion among Caribbean and Pacific youth delegates. The conversation initially centered on project proposals presented by both regions earlier that day. However, it evolved into a broader dialogue on youth engagement in decision-making processes. Dr Barnett underscored the importance of fostering more meaningful youth participation in shaping policy and direction.

Dr. Barnett also engaged in a stimulating exchange with Mr. Luke James-Trim, CARICOM Youth Ambassador for Trinidad and Tobago. Mr. Trim, a media advocate, emphasized the crucial role of media in disseminating information critical to Small Island Developing States (SIDS). He further accentuated the need for enhanced digital connectivity to address pressing economic development and climate challenges.

In a symbolic gesture of commitment, Dr Barnett signed a pledge box, declaring her dedication to "Bridging the gap between youth and decision-makers for a more sustainable future."
