PRIZES FOR THIRD PLACE WINNER CARICOM BOOK COVER DESIGN COMPETITION

Third place winner in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Book Cover Design Competition, 16-year-old Kurt Dougan, a national of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, was presented with prizes at a ceremony last Friday in Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

They include a Toshiba laptop computer, courtesy of Banks DIH of Guyana, an airline ticket to Guyana to visit the CARICOM Secretariat for four days and five nights, courtesy of BWIA West Indies Ltd, a voucher for spending money on the trip to Guyana, courtesy of the Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago, and a copy of the book entitled, "Our Caribbean Community", which will be autographed by the Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community.

On hand to present the prizes were representatives of the sponsors, Mr. Leroy Wilson on behalf of BWIA West Indies Airways, and Mr. Alphie Skerrette on behalf of the Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago.

The laptop computer was presented to Mr. Dougan by Mr. Carrington on behalf of Banks DIH of Guyana.

Mr. Carrington, in offering congratulations to Kurt, commented that with such young people in our Community, "we can take courage that the flag of regional integration will continue to fly and fly high." He also conveyed his sincere thanks and appreciation to all the sponsors for their generous support for the competition.

The Book Cover Competition was conducted over the period 9 January to 23 February 2001. The competition attracted more than 200 entries by youth from across the Region for a cover design for the text-book

Mr. Andrew Davies, 23, a national of Jamaica, residing in Barbados captured the top prize, while Ms. Tavernelle Wells, 18, of Trinidad and Tobago, placed second. In third position was 16-year-old Kurt Dougan of St.Vincent and the Grenadines, and the fourth place entry was from 15-year-old Donovan Daal of Suriname.

Participating in the presentation ceremony were the Minister of State in the Ministry of Education Hon. Clayton Burgin, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mrs. Patricia Martin; Kurt's parents Mr. and Mrs. Dougan; the Principal of his school - St. Vincent Grammar School - Mrs. Margaret Leacock; his teacher Mrs. Sandra Bart-Peters; and classmates.

The book, "Our Caribbean Community", which is being prepared by the CARICOM Secretariat, is intended to educate and inform the youth of the Community about the history of the movement and major developments in the integration process. It will be published later this year by Ian Randle Publishers of Jamaica.
