CRICKET CONFERENCE SET FOR BARBADOS THIS WEEK
As Caribbean citizens rally around West Indies Cricket, an all-inclusive team of enthusiasts from around the Region will meet for two days in Bridgetown, Barbados, on 1-2 June, 2000, to set a new framework for reclaiming the pride and glory of the regional sport.
The two-day Conference, to be hosted by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat and the University of the West Indies, in collaboration with the Government of Barbados will be staged at the Cave Hill Campus. It is billed as an interactive forum which will engage fans, the West Indies Cricket Board, the West Indies Players Association, National Cricket Boards, the West Indies Umpires Association, the Media, Educators, Managers, and Sponsors who will come-up with proposals to address regional cricket, and a programme for preparing its people to host the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
Over the past two months a series of national consultations were held directed at mobilising a response from citizens of the Caribbean.
The first day of the Plenary Session will focus on the outcome of these consultations which are expected to contribute towards developing a new perspective for the future of West Indies cricket.
The second day will focus on specific themes such as Cricket Culture as influenced by Popular Culture, Technology and Gender, Cricket as a Business, and Making World Cup 2007 a success.
Following this encounter, the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will be informed of the decisions.
