CARICOM LOOKS AT REFORM OF ELECTRIC SECTOR
(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat will be convening the Second Meeting of Experts and Stakeholders Concerning the Development of Harmonised Legislation for the Reform of the Electric Sector at the Amaryllis Beach Resort, Christ Church, Barbados during the period 9-11 April 2008. This meeting is co-sponsored by the Caribbean Renewable Energy Development Programme (CREDP), the CARICOM Legislative Drafting Facility (CLDF) and the Caribbean Law Institute Centre (CLIC), University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.
It is the second of a series of two meetings aimed at establishing and building regional consensus on a policy framework to foster the widespread deployment of renewable energy through the development of harmonised legislation for the reform of the electric sector. The end result of the process is to facilitate ultimate acceptance of draft model legislation in the different national jurisdictions of the Community.
Participants of the meeting include the Chief Parliamentary Counsel of Member States, officials from the Ministries with responsibility for Energy and/or Renewable Energy, representatives from regional electric utilities and regulators, and representatives from the donor community.
Senator, the Hon. Darcy Boyce, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Affairs & Development and Energy and, Dr. Roland Clarke, Project Manager of the Caribbean Renewable Energy Development Programme (CREDP) will open the meeting.
