GULP to contest February polls

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Grenada’s oldest political party Tuesday signalled its intention to contest the February 19 general elections despite having not won a seat since 1999.
Former opposition leader Michael Baptiste will lead the Grenada United Labour Party (GULP) that once dominated politics here under the leadership of then prime minister Eric Gairy, who was removed from office in the first ever coup in the English speaking Caribbean in 1979.
Baptiste was elected to lead the party following a meeting of senior GULP officials on Sunday, the same day that Prime Minister Tillman Thomas announced the election date and urged supporters to give his ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) another five year term in power.
