CARIBBEAN-MIGRATION-Congresswoman wants Caribbean included in debate on Immigration
WASHINGTON, CMC – The Congresswoman who represents the largely Caribbean 9th Congressional District in Brooklyn, New York, wants her colleagues as well as President Barack Obama to include the Caribbean Diaspora as they debate the contentious issue of immigration reform. Congress Tuesday started hearings on the issue and Democratic Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke, the daughter of Jamaican immigrants, said ‘we must embrace the diversity of those who are impacted by reform and understand that this debate cannot solely rest on the shoulders of our Latino brothers and sisters.” She said the nation’s “fixation on Latinos, as the target immigrant group, has resulted in a skewed depiction of the diversity of our immigrant population”. Clarke said there are about three million immigrants from the African Diaspora in the US, many of whom entered the country with legal documentation as students or asylum seekers.
