Journalist to sue Sports Minister

Mar 25, 2013

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Journalist Anika Gumbs-Sandiford has retained former attorney general Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj as she pursues legal action against Sports Minister Anil Roberts for defamation.
“I have been advised by Senior Counsel that the words spoken and published amount to serious slander and libel and would entitle me to be vindicated by the court in respect to my character and reputation as an investigative journalist.
“I am further advised that I will be entitled to punitive damages if the said parties do not apologise and withdraw their allegations of defamation against me,” Gumbs-Sandiford said in a statement, referring also to her decision to pursue legal action against the NEWSDAY newspaper and its reporter Andre Bagoo for publishing the allegations against here “without giving me an opportunity to defend my name and reputation”.
