Appeal Court denies stay of execution to Dominica government
ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC - The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court of Appeal (ECSC) has denied an application by the Dominica government for a “stay of execution” in the case brought by the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP), challenging the process by which President Eluid Williams was elected to office.
Earlier this year, High Court Judge, Justice Lionel Jones ruled that the case brought by the UWP should proceed to trial, but the attorneys representing Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, House Speaker Alix Boyd Knights and Attorney General Levi Peter, had been granted leave to appeal the ruling.
But Justice of Appeal, Davidson Baptiste, in an order dated May 21, noted “the Court being of the opinion that the appellants have not satisfied the requirements for the grant of a stay; it is hereby ordered that the application for a stay of execution of the directions of the Judge dated February 22, 2013 is refused.”
