Is the USA on the brink again?

Jul 15, 2013

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua - The decision of the jury in the George Zimmerman case has inflamed race relations in the United States of America once again. Already, the cries have gone out preaching peace, perfect peace, and the world holds its breath to see what the aftermath of a “ Not Guilty ” verdict will be. Our readers will recall the riots that resulted from the police beating of Rodney King in California, a few years ago. Will such riots recur? What will the reaction of the African American community be? We do not believe that extensive rioting, which is always accompanied by the destruction of millions of dollars worth of property and the loss of life of life, is the answer to a verdict that has not found favour with millions of people. But millions of people cannot be members of the jury. The fact is that the jury has spoken. Everyone will never be in agreement, regardless who has been the alleged aggressor or the unfortunate victim. We must also remember that Florida is the southernmost state of the “Deep South” and that the prejudices and attitudes that created the Civil War have neither died nor disappeared after the passage of nearly 200 years.
