CARICOM SECRETARY-GENERAL SPREADS CHRISTMAS CHEER AT RED CROSS ORPHANAGE

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General, His Excellency Edwin Carrington along with staff members of his office got into the Christmas spirit on December 12, 2008 with the sharing of gifts at the Red Cross Convalescent Home for Children, Georgetown, Guyana.

Secretary-General Carrington said that the exercise was to “help spread Christmas cheer to the youngsters.” He expressed appreciation to and admiration of the staff of the orphanage for their efforts in providing care to the children some of whom are HIV/AIDS orphaned, while others were abandoned or abused.

A monetary donation was also presented to the institution.

The Red Cross Convalescent Home currently houses close to 50 children, ranging from seven months to five years old. Children over five are processed for adoption through the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, or transferred to similar institutions.

At the conclusion of the visit, the Secretary-General said that he was saddened in some ways but was lifted by the joy and spirit of the children of the institution.
