(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Representatives of the Regional legal fraternity, policy holders, bankers, business executives and entrepreneurs are among those who will have an opportunity to explore developments in law as they relate to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) at the inaugural symposium on Current Developments in Caribbean Community Law.

The Symposium will be held from 9-11 November 2009, in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. It is organised by the Caribbean Law Institute Centre (CLIC) of the Faculty of Law of the University of the West Indies in association with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat and the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ). The 9th European Development Fund (EDF) Caribbean Integration Support Programme (CISP) is partly funding the exercise.

The opening ceremony on Monday will feature addresses by the Hon. Patrick Manning, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, the Hon David Thompson, Prime Minister of Barbados, H.E. Edwin Carrington, Secretary-General of CARICOM, Professor E. Nigel Harris, Vice Chancellor, University of the West Indies, the Rt. Hon. Justice de la Bastide, President of the CCJ and Prof. Winston Anderson, Executive Director, CLIC.

CLIC, CARICOM Secretariat, CCJ are among the organizations providing resource persons.

Among the issues to be covered by the presentations are:

• The free movement of goods, capital, skilled labour, service providers

• Freedom to start businesses in the Community

• Foreign currency trading

• CSME Issues in national courts

• Compliance by CARICOM with Administrative Law Principles

• Competition among commercial enterprises within the Community

• CCJ Litigation by the Private Sector

• The global financial crisis and regional opportunities

The Symposium’s final session titled `Reflections: Progress and Challenges’ will take the form of a panel discussion with panelists Dr. the Hon Kenny Anthony, Leader of the Opposition of Saint Lucia, the Rt. Hon. Owen Arthur, former Prime Minister of Barbados, Justice Duke Pollard of the CCJ, and Sir Shridath Ramphal, former Commonwealth Secretary-General.
