CARICOM extends sympathy to families of victims of recent terror attacks

Jan 09, 2026

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has extended its sympathy to the families of persons killed in recent brutal attacks in Sweden and Egypt, stating that incidents such as these serve to strengthen the resolve of the international community to defeat terrorism in all its forms.

The attack in Stockholm, Sweden on 7 April in which a lorry was ploughed into pedestrians, claimed the lives of four persons from Sweden, Belgium and Great Britain.

CARICOM Chairman, President David Granger of Guyana, in a message of condolence, condemned the attack, noting that ‘this senseless savagery has no place in a civilized world.  He assured Sweden of CARICOM’s solidarity and empathy as the country recovers from the  ‘heartless assault’ while wishing a full and speedy recovery to those injured.

The attack in Egypt at two Coptic Christian churches in Tanta and Alexandria on 9 April, killed at least 40 and injured more 100.

“The fact that these attacks occurred on Palm Sunday, an important Christian festival, renders them all the more outrageous,” the CARICOM Chairman said.

“CARICOM is confident that, in the words of Pope Tawadros II, the leader of the Coptics, the “sinful acts will not undermine the unity and coherence of the Egyptian people in the face of terrorism”,” he added.
