Caribbean Community Heads of States, the CARICOM Secretary-General and senior environmental officers are in Marrakech, Morrocco, for the 22nd Meeting of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP 22), November 7-18, 2017.
Discussions are focusing on the implementation of the first-ever universal, legally binding global climate deal, the Paris Agreement, approved at the Paris climate conference (COP21) in December 2015.
CARICOM has consistently articulated that climate change poses an immediate threat and that the Region has already begun to experience its impact.
Negotiators in Morocco are therefore retaining a focus on the need for the global community to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and strive to hold the long term temperature goal, preferably below 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
