The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has extended deep sympathy to the government and people of Italy following a deadly 6.2-magnitude earthquake there on Wednesday.

In a message of condolence, CARICOM Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque said that it was the Community's hope that rescue teams were successful in their efforts to save those who survived the quake and might be trapped in the rubble.

“The Caribbean Community expresses its deep sympathy to the Government and people of Italy at the loss of life and property due to the earthquake in the Perugia region.

 Sincere condolences are extended to those who have lost their families and friends to the ravages of this natural disaster.  The Community hopes that the rescue teams are successful in their efforts to save those who have survived and may still be trapped in the rubble.

 The Caribbean Community is confident that the determination and will of the people of Italy will ensure that they overcome this tragedy and rebuild their lives and their communities.”
