Mark! Set! Go! CARICOM 10k Race to be held 3 July

The twelfth Annual CARICOM 10K race will be held on Sunday, 3 July, 2016, at 6:00 am in Georgetown, Guyana. The event will be held under the Theme ‘Promoting Healthy and Peaceful Societies’. The race is held to coincide with the Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM which will be held in Georgetown, Guyana, 4-6 July.

Member States have been asked to select, at least two athletes (male and female) and a coach to represent their countries. So far St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Guyana have confirmed their participation. Dominica and Barbados have also indicated their interest in participating.

The start line for the 10K Race will be the CARICOM Secretariat and the race will end at the Guyana National Park where a presentation ceremony will be held.  In addition to the main event, there will three supporting events a 5K race  to encourage participation of local Athletic Clubs, a 1500m race for schools, and a special race for athletes with disabilities.

There will be cash prizes for the first, second and third place winners of the male and female 10k races. All other participants will receive a medal of participation. Support for this event, including prizes, has been secured from Digicel Guyana, Courts Guyana, Demerara Distillers Limited, Eureka Laboratories and CARICOM Rice Mills Limited.

Last year, Guyanese Cleveland Forde and Trinidadian Tonya Nero made it two in a row when they retained their male and female titles respectively in the 2015 edition of the CARICOM 10K race held in Bridgetown, Barbados, on Sunday 28 June. Forde followed up his 2014 win with 33 minutes 11 seconds to edge out Jamaican Kirk Browne, and six-time winner of the event Pamenos Ballantine of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Nero won the female 10k in 37 minutes 06 seconds, ahead of Linda McDowald of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Andrea Foster of Guyana.
