CELAC adopts CARICOM’s call for reparations

Feb 02, 2016

The Community of Latin and American States CELAC Parliamentary group has adopted the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) call for reparations for native genocide and the enslavement of African people in the Caribbean through the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.

The call for its adoption came via a presentation from St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) Speaker of the House of Assembly Jomo Thomas during a meeting last week in which legislators from 17 countries met in Quito Ecuador to formalise the operation of a parliamentary network across Latin America and the Caribbean. Thomas, who is the Chairman of the Reparations Commission for SVG, noted that CARICOM has agreed on the call for reparatory justice and urged CELAC parliamentarians to join the cause.

The final call for the motion, which was adopted by the parliamentary group, was drafted and and submitted by Deputy Speaker of the House Senator Carlos James.
