CARICOM finds Chinese support on key Climate Change issues
The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) met Monday with China on the sidelines of the Climate Conference, COP 21 in Paris, France.
The CARICOM team was led by the Environment Minister of Barbados Dr. Denis Lowe, and included the Minister of Governance, with responsibility for Natural Resources in Guyana, Raphael Trotman and CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque.
The team found support for some of the Region’s key climate change concerns including:
The long-term temperature goal of well below 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels
Having an international legally binding agreement from the COP 21
Inclusion of loss and damage as an integral part of the COP 21 agreement,and as a distinct element from adaptation, and
Special consideration for Small Island and Low-lying Developing States (SIDS) which include CARICOM Member States
Countries and Regions have been using their presence at the COP 21 to hold bilateral engagements on Climate Change and related matters.
