CARICOM Youth Ambassadors Weigh in on their role in society

CARICOM Youth Ambassadors in the Federation have weighed in on their role in society, as well as youth issues in St. Kitts and Nevis in celebration of Youth Month 2015 which is observed in November under the theme “Give Youth a Voice and Inspire Greatness.”

Kerissa Roberts, Youth Ambassador on behalf of other Youth Ambassadors, took the time out to reflect on their talents.

“As our Federation pauses to recognize the enormous potential of youth as catalyst for innovation, for development and for positive social change, we the young people of St Kitts & Nevis would also like to acknowledge the greatness that emerges each day from within our ranks,” said Ms. Roberts.

She explained that youth from all walks of life are emerging every day.

“Across our Federation, young people are working tirelessly to build the foundations of our nation’s future,” she said, adding that youth from all sectors of society are emerging daily as community leaders activists, entrepreneurs, and founders of NGOs, outstanding athletes, agriculturalists, musicians, and artists. “Our young people are in every office and company across all levels of government and the private sector.”

She stated that the youth are at the forefront of the wave of social engagement and activism that is sweeping the country and they continue to embody and inspire the greatness upon which the nation is built.

Ms. Roberts paid recognition to the many persons, past and present who continue to ensure that the voice of youth is not only recognized in the month of November, but is heard, acknowledged and taken seriously all year round.

“We commend the multitude of efforts that have been made by the leaders of our society to empower our young people,” she said, while noting that a number of programmes such as the CARICOM Youth Ambassador Programme, the St. Kitts National Youth Parliament and the Nevis Youth Council continue to ensure the inclusion of youth in national dialogue and policy making.

Youth Ambassador Roberts made special mention of the 25 Most Remarkable Teens initiatives stating that it highlights the positivity that young people embody, while partnerships with UNICEF and other regional and international organizations have provided unparalleled opportunities for youth empowerment and capacity building.

Twenty-five (25) Most Remarkable Teens from across the Federation who are making a difference in developing the nation will be awarded on Thursday, November 12, 2015, during a special sitting of the National Assembly, where the stories of the young people are shared with the nation via a live television broadcast. They will receive encouraging words and awards from various Members of Parliament. The awards are given in non-traditional categories recognizing courage, determination and commitment.
