‘Animating the Caribbean’ expanding its network

Oct 24, 2015

The Region’s largest animation and digital media festival, Animae Caribe, is staging its 14th edition of the festival from 27 – 31 October, 2015, in Trinidad and Tobago.

At this year’s event, Animae Caribe is recording significant progress in terms of Regional representation with attendance of animation networks from Jamaica JAN (Jamaica Animation Network), Barbados BANG (Barbados Animation Network Guild), Suriname SAN (Suriname Animation Network) and Trinidad and Tobago TTAN (Trinidad and Tobago Animation Network).

With support from Carib-Export, an Animated Ideas Bootcamp will be held as well as a round table event for animators and animation studios in the Caribbean to strategise and discuss critical issues affecting the industry.

Animae Caribe has registered the Caribbean Chapter with the Association International de Film d’Animation (ASIFA), an international organisation founded in 1960 in France with about 30 chapters in various parts of the world. ASIFA will be hosting the first Caribbean Elections at Animae Caribe 2015.

Animae Caribe was founded to raise awareness of animation and technology in the Caribbean and works as a holistic forum for the discussion, promotion and strategic development of the animation industry in the Caribbean. It provides a platform for animators in the Caribbean to interact with international experts in the field of animation.

With its mandate for the development of the creative industries in the Region, the CARICOM Secretariat has been collaborating closely with Animae Caribe in raising awareness of the various ways in which animation and digital media may be used in the Region and promoting the use of animation in learning environments, public education and safeguarding cultural heritage. A series of animation workshops has been organised under the CARICOM-Animae Caribe Regional initiative ‘Animating the Caribbean’.

In 2013, the Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) hosted its first Animation and Anansi Component in Suriname in collaboration with Animae Caribe.
